Stablecoin Payment Startups Buck Broader Crypto Funding Slump

Even as overall crypto financing halved in the first quarter, stablecoin payments startups continue to close large rounds, underscoring the sector's pivot from trading tools to payment infrastructure.

Stablecoin payments have become one of the few sectors still able to consistently raise large funding rounds, even as overall crypto financing halves. A Federal Reserve study published in April 2026 put the total stablecoin market cap at roughly $317 billion as of April 6, growth of more than 50% compared to early 2025.

Notable deals include OpenFX, which completed a $23 million seed round in 2025 and then raised another $94 million about ten months later. The company told Reuters that its annualized payment volume increased from $4 billion to a substantially higher level in that period.

This flow of capital reflects a shift in stablecoins' role from trading tools toward payment infrastructure, with investors betting on real-world settlement and treasury applications rather than speculative crypto market activity.
